More Than 10,000 Species of Birds Exist
We are uniquely capable of helping protect species important to you.
NEURAL NETWORK AND TRAINING SPECIES
The advantage of IdentiFlight is its ability to determine species of interest in real time by utilizing a proprietary hybrid of machine vision and neural network technologies.
Species of interest are determined through agreements between the customer and regulatory stakeholders. Key considerations in determining a species of interest includes local or global population sensitivity (threatened, endangered, etc.), local protections, and cultural relevance.
Machine vision techniques consist of analyzing images against a set of rules to determine the degree to which an image matches the features of the species of interest (wingspan, color, flight posture, etc.).
In addition to machine vision techniques, IdentiFlight also utilizes convolutional neural networks, which are trained via supervised machine learning.
Millions of images contained within IdentiFlight’s database are used to train neural networks. These species-specific networks are trained with images known to be the target species and tuned to reduce false positives and false negatives when classifying the species. As the “truth” data set grows, neural network accuracy can be further analyzed and improved.

ADDING SPECIES
A neural network can be developed for a target species by collecting a suitable library of images acquired by IdentiFlight cameras. The library includes images in a wide variety of conditions, such as high contrast, backlighting, and different flight presentations. IdentiFlight has developed supervised learning tools and processes that collect and analyze image data to improve the classification of species as site conditions vary. Classification data is validated by a team of bird experts.
The duration of this data collection process depends on the abundance of the species, especially for migratory or scarce populations. As IdentiFlight’s library of images increases, there is less reliance on site-specific images. As an example, images collected in Uzbekistan are being used to develop neural networks in France.
