INSTALLATIONS


Top of the World
Wyoming, USA

Formerly Duke Energy Renewables, Deriva Energy’s Top of the World wind farm in Wyoming was the first wind operator to commercially install IdentiFlight in 2017. The Top of the World site has been a part of the IdentiFlight innovation story from the beginning, with early versions installed and modified at the facility during development of the technology. There are currently 47 IdentiFlight stations operational at the site.

“Duke Energy understands the importance of balancing the need for clean, renewable energy while protecting wildlife, including the iconic bald and golden eagles," said Tim Hayes, Environmental Director.

Results on the efficacy of IdentiFlight at Top of the World were published by the Peregrine Fund in 2020 and updated in 2022 in the Journal of Applied Ecology.

Cattle Hill
Tasmania, Australia

Operated by Goldwind Australia, Cattle Hill Wind Farm is located on the eastern shore of Lake Echo in the southern side of the Central Plateau of Tasmania. 17 IdentiFlight stations are installed and operational to curtail turbines. IdentiFlight overcame complex environmental and geographical challenges to protect Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagles and white-bellied sea eagles.

John Titchen, Goldwind Managing Director, said this 2019 installation was the first of its kind in Australia. “We’re very pleased to partner with the IdentiFlight team as the first wind farm in Australia to utilize this newly available innovative eagle monitoring and detection technology. The system is one of the project’s key initiatives to mitigate Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle impacts and we look forward to sharing the results.”

Peregrine Fund (2020)

USA | 2014 – 2019 study duration

Before and after comparison between a human bio monitor program and an IdentiFlight automated curtailment program at a wind power facility in Wyoming, USA. Confirms that IdentiFlight reduces eagle fatalities by 82 percent over human bio monitor programs. Increased to 85 percent in a study update in 2022.

Assessment of IdentiFlight efficacy at preventing collisions of threatened Tasmanian eagles including wedge tailed eagles and white bellied sea eagles at the Cattle Hill Wind Farm. Concluded that IdentiFlight was far superior to human bio monitors.

ACCREDITATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS


Germany

KNE has recognized IdentiFlight as an effective species-specific mitigation measure, a first for bird detection systems in Germany. This resulted in the formal inclusion of IdentiFlight in the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG) that was amended in 2022.

France

IdentiFlight was accepted in March 2023 by the Grand-East Region authorities in France as effective in reducing the mortality rates of the red kite in French wind farms. It is the first time that French authorities have validated an automated system as a sufficient measure to reduce the risk of bird collisions.

United States

IdentiFlight was the only technology mentioned by name in the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Eagle Permit Rule update in 2024. This solidifies that technology is considered a valid solution to avoid and minimize incidental take of golden and bald eagles in wind farms.
